Last Updated on February, 2025

When our beloved dogs roam outside our homes, we get stressed about their safety, right? That’s where a reliable pet tracker comes in handy.

Are you planning to use the PetFON pet tracker to keep track of your pup?

If so, read this article before you invest your hard-earned money in it.

I got the PetFON tracker for my pet dog, Alex, because he always tries to wander around. And I will share my experience with the PetFON pet tracker.

So, in this PetFON Pet GPS Tracker Review, we will discuss its main features and if it’s worth buying.

Let’s dive right in!

The Good

PetFON has no monthly charges, and it is waterproof.

The Not So Good

It gives inaccurate location readings. And PetFON’s battery life is weak, and it is expensive.

The Bottom Line

Although PetFON is waterproof and has no monthly charges, I cannot recommend it to dog lovers. Considering the inaccuracy and high cost of the product, I recommend you to take a look at Fi Series 2, which offers better performance at a much lower price. (Check out Fi Series 2 in the Better Alternative section.)

About PetFON Pet Tracker

PetFON is a smart GPS tracker that keeps track of your pet using a smartphone app.

It offers the Virtual Geo-fence feature that lets dog owners set up safe zones for their pets. And if your pet leaves a safe zone, you will receive a notification.

PetFON is a company in New Jersey that researches and develops wearable technologies for pets.

PetFON has separate pet trackers and dog collars to track and monitor your furry friends.

PetFON 1 is its earlier version. Later, the manufacturers announced PetFON 2. PetFON 2 is more robust and resistant than PetFON 1.

In this article, we will discuss the features of PetFON 2.

So, keep reading to learn more about the tracker.

How Does it Work?

PetFON pet tracker allows you to locate your dog by linking the tracker with the downloadable app.

PetFON uses a GPS tracker for your dog and a control module for you to pinpoint locations.

Your pooch has to wear the PetFON collar, and you will have to control it using the app and follow the instructions.

Then, you can view your pet’s location and activities in the app.

The tracker also acts as your pet’s daily activity monitor. PetFON lets you receive instant alerts about your pup’s location, set boundaries for them, and check activity records.

Features of PetFON Pet Tracker

Now, let’s dig deeper into the main features of the PetFON pet tracker.

Design and Durability

PetFON’s collar is lightweight, heavy-duty, and comfortable. In addition, it uses quality materials to maintain its durability.

The tracker is waterproof and has an IP65 waterproof rating. And it is dustproof too.

Another important thing to mention about the collar is its neoprene padding. It reduces irritation when dogs become active and playful.

The PetFON collar comes in a range of sizes. So, it is better to measure your dog’s neck before purchasing the product.

The sizes are as follows:

  • Small: 11” – 14.5”
  • Medium: 14.5” – 19”
  • Large: 19”- 23”

Moreover, the collar has reflective stitching that makes your pet more visible at nighttime.

GPS Tracking

PetFON pet tracker uses GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, Radar, and Glonass technologies to provide real-time location.

The device can search and locate pets using Radar technology in case you do not have GPS coverage.

Radar technology allows you to search and locate your dog when there is no GPS signal.

The tracker sends a beeping signal using Radar technology to let you know how close you are to your pet.

When you get closer to your dog, the beeping becomes faster.

That sounds INTERESTING, right?

Moreover, PetFON does not require SIM cards or cellular signals to function.

PetFON enables you to track your dog in urban areas for up to 0.65 miles and in open areas for up to 3.5 miles. But keep in mind that the surroundings can affect these ranges.

Geo-fence

The PetFON smart tracker has the Geo-fencing feature. It allows you to define safe zones for your dog to roam freely. And the app will send you instant notifications if your pup leaves a predetermined safe area.

You can create multiple safe zones to ensure your dog’s safety.

Activity and Fitness Tracking

PetFON pet tracker monitors your dog’s daily activity and fitness records. They include the daily number of steps, distance traveled, and duration.

Check out our article on the best dog activity & fitness trackers if you are looking one.

Battery Life

PetFON pet tracker’s battery life lasts up to 8-16 hours.

And it is a rechargeable battery that comes with a compact charging station.

If you wish to save battery life, you can turn off the position indicating light and WiFi-assisted location option.

You can also turn on the power save mode, but it will not send you auto updates about your pup’s location. As a result, you will have to manually click the update button to receive instant alerts.

Smartphone App

The PetFON app is compatible with devices with iOS 11.0 or later and Android 5.0 or later.

And its interfaces are QUITE EASY to follow.

You can view your pup’s daily route and location in the default view.

Also, the app lets you set safe and dangerous zones around your home or outdoors.

Plus, you will receive instant notifications whenever your dog leaves a secure area.

This is all thanks to the Virtual Geo-fencing feature.

Apart from that, PetFON tracker allows you to track up to three dogs using one app. But you will need separate tracking modules if you want to track more than one dog.

Voice-Commanding System

The app has a voice-commanding system that lets you record voice commands and communicate with your dog remotely.

Multicolor Alert

PetFON also allows you to activate the colorful lights on the tracker to make your pet more visible at night.

My Personal Opinion

Are you excited to know about my experience with the PetFON pet tracker?

So, read on to find out!

My pup Alex ran off our home multiple times while wearing the PetFON tracker. So, I was not worried about it, because I thought I could track him quickly with the tracker.

But unfortunately, I was WRONG!

After Alex ran off, I relied on the tracker and the app to track him quickly. But the PetFON app was freezing all the time, and it did not show the exact location of my pet.

The app could not connect with the tracker properly. And the location readings were inaccurate and slow.

Plus, the location updates were way too slow! It consistently took more than five minutes to let me know that Alex had left the safe zone..

Also, I was getting nowhere near the claimed battery life which was around 8 hours.

My tracker died within the 5 to 6 hour mark almost all the time, this is way too low!

What if the dog goes missing for even a few hours of time?

However, PetFON provided the daily activity levels of my dog. But that was not the benefit I expected from the device.

Apart from that, the voice commanding system stopped working after a week, which was so disappointing.

Sadly, I cannot recommend the PetFON pet tracker for these upsetting reasons. It’s up to you to make the best choice for your loving pet.

But hang on a second! There’s a better alternative.

Then I came across Fi series 2, and I realized that it is an EXCELLENT product.

I also read so many positive reviews from Fi customers.

Believe me!

Fi series 2 is a WAY BETTER tracking device that provides faster and more accurate 24/7 real-time location.

fi collar

I used the Fi device on my pooch, and it was a fantastic experience. The location tracking is high-speed and accurate. I can rely on this tracker even when my dog wanders outside the home.

Fi series 2 uses the LTE-M network to pinpoint your dog’s location more reliably.

Want to know the best part of it?

The signals of the LTE-M network reach around 30% farther than 3G, 4G, 5G, and LTE. That’s pretty AMAZING, don’t you think?

Moreover, Fi series 2 has an OUTSTANDING design that is excellent for the outdoors and suits even the most adventurous dogs.

Fi is a subscription-based collar.

And the Fi device costs $149 and has three plans as follows:

  • 1 year: $1.89/week ($99 billed annually)
  • 2 years: $1.79/week ($186 billed every two years)

Unlike the PetFON tracker, Fi series 2 gave me the maximum benefits of dog tracking.

So, here are the BREATHTAKING reasons why Fi series 2 is better than the PetFON pet tracker.

Design and durability:

The Fi collar uses more durable and higher-quality materials. It has an armored Aluminum faceplate and reinforced internal metal armor. This makes the device dirt-proof, adventure-proof, and chew-proof too.

Fi has a better waterproof rating which is an IP68. And it is salt water resistant too.

Moreover, the Fi collar has a broader range of collar sizes. It ranges from 11.5 inches to 34.5 inches.

Besides that, Fi offers an unbelievable 300lbs pull resistance with its reinforced hardware.

GPS tracking:

You can experience more reliable, accurate, and faster 24/7 real-time location tracking using the Fi Series 2. This is because Fi uses the LTE-M network, and it has better signal coverage.

Battery life:

Fi has a remarkable battery life which lasts up to 3 months when using the Dog At Home Only Mode.

Activity Tracking:

Fi series 2 has advanced health, fitness, and activity features.

It provides daily, weekly, and monthly activity levels and tells you how much activity your pet needs to be healthy and active.

Conclusion

The PetFON pet tracker cannot always provide reliable and accurate real-time location. Its biggest downside is its weak battery life. But, if you want a tracker with no subscription fee, you can go for PetFON.

Fi series 2 provides faster and more precise 24/7 location tracking. It also has unmatchable battery life. So, if you need to keep track of your beloved pet in the most reliable way, check out Fi series 2 and ensure your pet’s well-being.
